HID Global pivCLASS® Government Solutionsenable facilities to upgrade their existingphysical access control system (PACS) to FIPS201 compliance.The pivCLASS R10, R15, R40 readers and theirprox enabled versions deliver the "Controlled"assurance level (as defined in NIST SP 800-116)when used with the pivCLASS AuthenticationModule (PAM) to perform the following singlefactor authentication modes:CHUID + VIS Authentication – The pivCLASSsystem tests the signature on the PIV CardHolder Unique IDentifier (CHUID) data object.
The CHUID signature check ensures the card isauthentic (it came from a valid issuer) and hasintegrity (it has not been altered).Because the CHUID is a “free read” and willbe transmitted unencrypted to any reader, itcould be possible for perpetrators to capturea PIV card's CHUID and create a counterfeitcard. However, the pivCLASS signature checksecures against this threat and identifies cardsthat have been counterfeited or altered.*CAK Authentication – pivCLASS readers workwith the pivCLASS Authentication Module toperform a PKI challenge-response in additionto a signature check to validate the cardauthentication key (CAK). The challengeresponse test ensures the public key in thecard authentication certificate is bound tothe private key on the card. pivCLASS CAKauthentication secures against cards that havebeen counterfeited, altered, copied or cloned.pivCLASS readers are guaranteed to meetstringent specifications for operation, reliabilityand interoperability with other Genuine HID™products.
